Cube – A YouTube Relic

In the interest of putting something out today (I’ve been a little under the weather the past few days), I’ve decided to break out this relic from YouTube circa 2006 – a video for a fictional game called CUBE!

It’s actually a rather nice animation for what it tries to parody; late 80’s / early 90’s computer games. The funny thing is, the software that was used to animate this I’m somewhat familiar with – a 3D graphics program called Bryce. Not bad stuff by any means, but it does take some skill to really make something great with it. Basic shapes and animations however aren’t too hard, at least back when I used it last, which was about the same time this animation would have been made.

The peculiar way the narration in the video describes the game, both in-universe and in so far as how you physically play it always made this a favorite in the early days of YouTube, back when people could make relatively stupid things like that and them actually  still have some kind of enjoyable quality – today everything is either overdone or is so terrible it can’t be enjoyed. At least, that’s how I feel about a bulk of the content. Maybe more on the subject of what I like in various YouTube videos and content creators, in the future.  More to come, once I get feeling back to normal.

For now, get ready, for CUBE!*
