First Thoughts On Destiny 2

Last night I snagged Destiny 2, in my case on the Xbox One. As I have mentioned a bit before, I genuinely enjoyed the first Destiny, and its expansions. While I didn’t do much in the way of strikes and raids, I did enjoy the main game for what it was, the world, the settings, and the actual gameplay mechanics.

As for Destiny 2, it feels pretty much like a directly improved version of the original game. That’s a good thing, to me – it only seems to add to the core elements of Destiny while not really taking away anything we already had. At least to me, in what I’ve played so far.

I’m enjoying the story line, the new enemy types, the new setting, and just how damn nice the game looks – sure, it’s not that much of an improvement over the original but games to me have already reached a graphical peak in some ways – what I can say is that subtle elements of texturing this time around really stand out – I forgot during some of the cut scenes that they were real time renders and not pre-rendered cinematics.

I’ve only dived a few hours into the game but yeah, generally speaking I like what I see. While I do wish the original game could have been “patched” to use this better engine and just continued from there, I can certainly think of reasons where this wouldn’t be practical and a new releases would be the better option.

To that end, I hope the expansions are worth it – I don’t have an issue paying for a game like this that I know I will play for well over 100 hours, but I also expect this game to live for more than a few small expansions – Destiny 2 should hopefully follow the original “10 year plan” that Destiny was supposed to follow.

More to come as I get further in the game.

  1. I feel like Destiny 2 is what Destiny 1 should have been. I really like the adventures that are on each planet, but wish there was a codex to keep track of the new enemies and lore. So far so good.

    1. I feel ya. While I do like the beacon-based side missions that were in destiny, the adventure system IS solid – both would work well together but given the Destiny 2 scenario, it makes sense to have beacons long gone, right?

I’m actually about to finally get back to the game – haven’t played nearly as much as you would think recently!
