Game Player’s Gametape Vol. 1 No. 4: Sports Games

Well, no one said that all of these tapes would be exciting. Tape 4 in volume 1 of the Game Player’s Magazine tips tapes series is all about sports games. Now, to be fair, many of the sports titles on the NES are quite solid games, they play well enough, they are genuinely fun and while sometimes somewhat simple, they capture the game in such a way that a person can enjoy the core of the sport without needing to be a super-fan to understand it.

This time around, we have: Bandai Golf, Baseball Stars, Bases Loaded, Goal, Hoops, SUper Dodge Ball, Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf, and Tecmo Bowl.

I’m not going to lie, I’m just skimming over this tape, but it seems that the tape explains the very basics of the sports the games are based on, as a matter of helping the game itself be understandable – not like any kid in 1989 needed to be told how to play baseball, but golf isn’t exactly the most loved sport of someone 8 years old, so this makes more sense than it would seem. It just makes sense to explain them all, and how these elements relate to the video game being played.

There really isn’t anything special to say here – it’s the same old tapes we’ve been covering, just with sports games. Enjoy!
