Project Apollo Guidance and Navigation – 1968 NASA Apollo Digest

This film is a quick, 6 minute look at the navigation and guidance systems of the Apollo spacecraft. Something I noticed is that the film is dated to 1966, but uses footage from what is clearly the Apollo 6 mission, an unmanned Saturn V launch in April of 1968 – my best guess is this is a slightly older film updated with footage of a Saturn V launch in preparation for the upcoming Apollo 7 and 8 missions, which would be the first US manned fights since the Apollo 1 fire. Note the “early” flight suits shown at the beginning of the film.

Anyway, on subject to the film itself, as I said, it’s a short, quick, to the point look at the navigation and guidance systems of Apollo, systems critical not only to making it to the Moon but also to returning from the Moon back to the Earth.

I’ll let the film speak for itself, I could go into the systems in detail, but that’s not how we do things here – at least, not in articles like this!

Enjoy!
