RIP Angry Grandpa

I was rather shocked to read today about the death of a well known, and clearly well loved YouTube celebrity, Charles Green, better known as Angry Grandpa.

This one kind of hit me hard – I followed the show passively, but had been aware of it and the family, for quite a while, checking out the more famous videos (like Angry Grandpa Smashes PS4) as they went viral. It was fun “rage / angry parent” style content, nice for a break from the normal dreg on YouTube. Even not following them regularly, in watching random videos, including those he did with McJuggerNuggets in a collaborative video series, I grew to like him. I could see an aspect of myself in the rantings of an angry old man, as well as see some of my younger self in his son, Michael. That’s what I love about the self made side of YouTube, the people are still very real and relatable.

I didn’t know the man was sick – as a casual fan I hadn’t checked them out in months – but when I saw the news pop up on Twitter, I was surprised and, obviously, saddened. While he portrayed a very hostile, unfriendly character, the actual man who was Charles Green was far from that, caring greatly for his family and his fans. Going just a few videos past the viral content showed the love Charles and his son had for each other – at times saying that the other was the only family they had left.

A piece of the strange thing that is the internet was lost today… I’ll leave you with a few videos, links to the related YouTube channels and a wiki link. Go send em some love.
