The Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 143: Sega Genesis Accessories

Just like October means Halloween and with it a horror themed episode of the Angry Video Game Nerd series, December means a holiday themed episode. This year, it looks like James decided to go with more of a comedy skit than general review style video, which is fine with me, although many fans aren’t happy with this episode.

It’s worth noting before I begin that the actual title, at the time of this article, for this episode is “Sega Activator Interactor Menacer – Angry Video Game Nerd (Episode 143)” but due to it’s content, it would be much better titled “Sega Genesis Accessories.” I don’t know what Mike was thinking in the title, but I hope he does update it in the near future.

Regardless of what the episode is titled, you know what it entails, if you know gaming: Accessories for Sega’s best selling console, the Genesis (MegaDrive in the rest of the world.) Being a Genesis owner as a kid in the 90’s, I remember every one of these accessories being advertised in magazines and even inside the manuals and promo posters of games! Some of them I wanted and others were just whatever, but I honestly do recall almost all of these items!

I find it hilarious, too, how as I kid I wanted these, but as an adult I know just how terrible they are, and why they are so bad.The Activator just set each beam to a button on the Genesis, making it really awkward to try to play. The Interactor, which actually scared me somewhat as a kid, is basically a bass speaker right against your chest, and would react to the strong low end sounds associated with action games. I would imagine it would also react with music, making it quite the odd thing to wear while playing some games. The Menacer was great – a friend had one and I enjoyed using it, but there just weren’t many games for it. Not much you can do about that, but at least the thing worked!

As for the Victormax Stunt Master, I never had heard of that back in the day, but James did do a video on it many years ago. He and Mike could barely get it working. I do have to make comment that James saying in this video about everything going through the “same wire” is wrong – it’s a cable bundle, and as such each signal is on it’s own cable inside of that cable bundle… think a tube within a tube – the point is it isn’t anything too crazy, but it does make you laugh a bit when he says it.

As for the golf club and baseball bat, I do remember those, but never wanted them. They act exactly as you would imagine, but the comedy potential for them in this kind of video is high.

All in all, this was an alright video, but it really wasn’t much like the AVGN we all know and love. That being said, I leave the video here for you to check out. Enjoy!
