Building your own computer is considered pretty much the standard these days in most computer enthusiast circles – dare to mention you use a store-bought desktop and even if you have done some damn fine upgrades, odds are someone is going to find some issue with it and try to give you hell for simply buying a machine rather than making it yourself. (Hell, just look at the comments to this episode!)
The funny thing is, things were about the same 25 years ago, minus the hate for using a store bought machine. Back in 1992, you could go routes similar to what you can today, having a firm custom build it, to even just getting the parts and making it work yourself.
