The Computer Chronicles – Video Game Consoles (1990)

Ah, the 90’s. 1990, in this case. The Nintendo Entertainment System was still the champ, but the Sega Genesis was nipping at its heels. These were the days I started my love of gaming in, and it’s fascinating to watch videos like this from that time period that show when these consoles were new and in their prime.

What’s cool about this episode is it showing the Genesis before there was Sonic – it shows the Turbografx 16 in its short lived boom, and arguably the best of all, it shows the legendary Nintendo World Championships as they happened. Game collectors and fans will, of course, know that an NWC game cartridge is considered the “holy grail” among Nintendo game collecting.

Great footage and information from a great time period, to be sure. Of course, PC gaming is touched on plenty, with Sim Earth and Defender of the Crown showing off 1990 multimedia computer technology (Way to go Windows 3.0!) Arcades aren’t left out either, and it’s rather interesting to see both kids and adults comment on their gameplay hobbies. Note the kid in the Bart Simpson shirt about 12:15 in – that’s a sign of the time this was in!

At the end we get to see some of the 16-bit beast that is the Sega Genesis, in the form of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, followed by the CD addon for the TurboGrafx 16. Of course the video touches plenty on if kids should play games or not, an age old debate I won’t get in to here. I will say I generally agree with the guy at the end, give or take.

Quite the appropriate video, and with all the recent Switch news, I thought it would be a good piece to share with you. Enjoy!
