More Cleanup And Organizational Progress – An Update

As you may have noticed, things look a little different around here. I felt like the site needed a bit of an update, so I spent some time Saturday morning changing a few things around with quite the  surprising result. I really like this new look, and the simple shift to a nearly-black background I think is pretty nice. Does make the main content awfully bright by comparison, though…

This also marks a bit of a change in the sites title. Originally I called the site “A geeky little blog about nothing particular” which, yes, for those who catch it, is a Seinfeld reference. Ironically I’ve never actually watched the show (why, I have no idea) but I do enjoy that concept and decided to borrow it.

This, of course, works as a good description of what the site is – in fact it’s perfect. However, I have always had a few reservations on using words like “nerdy” or “geeky.” I don’t know why, maybe it’s a side effect from my youth when those terms were considered bad, but whatever case I decided now would be a time to simplify it to just “A blog about nothing particular.” Not as descriptive, but it does get the basic point across of “hey, this website contains pretty much whatever.”

I also took time to clean up many of the tags around the site, for easier navigation. Early on I never set up a standard scheme for tagging posts and when you combine that with typo’s made, there are quite a few very strange tags locked onto articles on the site, many of them only used in one entry, but no others. Some tags are used in some articles, but are missing in others, and some articles that would fit with a given tag, of course, don’t have it at all – it’s a complete mess.

I started on cleaning this aspect of the site up by refining some of the more broadly used tags, as well as deleting tags which are redundant, less descriptive, or are otherwise just not necessary – this includes tags related to the swath of recently deleted posts as part of the project to clean up the sites content. That should help people find more content they may be interested in.

On a final note of interest, I’ve tossed up the long-overdue Frequently Asked Questions (or FAQ) page for the “About” subsection. Not that these are ever questions which are actually asked but certainly things I would presume could come to mind if someone goes over the site – might as well provide answers ahead of time. Who knows, maybe someone will find it interesting.

I’m hoping to expand navigation more soon – I’m hoping to expand and refine the categories section, to continue refining post tagging, and as mentioned before to really overhaul the menu bar and the organization of serialized content since I plan on a ton more of that to come very soon.

Righto then, there’s a look behind the scenes for now. Contrary to what many think, being a blogger is not easy. These are the kinds of back-end things that really take some effort to get just right, but when they are, you know kind of know.

I’ll try now to cut back on these update entries.

More to come, as always.
