What I Learned From My September “Blog Entry A Day” Challenge

Back in September, I set myself out on a personal challenge to write an entry a day here, regardless of the content. The entire point of this project was not to write about anything in particular but to simply commit to a more steady writing pattern. As 2018 had progressed I had written far less than I would have liked to, and missed out on quite a few subjects I wanted to cover when they were relevant due to just not feeling like writing. I figured if I had a more steady pattern of publishing content (no matter what it was) it may put me into a habit of writing more often – at least, more often when I have something to really cover.

Apparently, it worked -The following month (October 2018) proved to be the second most productive month on Xadara since October 2016! I actually impressed myself with this, which wasn’t intentional but simply what happened as a side effect of what I found interesting that month. This had a negative side effect of me covering very little that wasn’t either something historic, or a current event in space – space dominated October this year, which was cool, yes, but it pushed out other things, which just isn’t a good thing since space is somewhat a side focus of this site.

So, what did I actually learn from this process?

It’s best not to force anything. That simple. If I want to take a few days away, I should. While I shouldn’t just avoid writing about something I find interesting, I should never push myself past where I’m having fun in an attempt to get something out. If I’m not having fun (by having to force out content) then I shouldn’t be bothering. This isn’t like a job blogging where I do it because I have it, it’s just a hobby.

I do find it interesting, still, that I only got a total of 38 entries done for September (an impressive number itself) but hit 45 for October when I wasn’t even trying to write that much.

More to come, as always.
