The Typewriter Journal Project

I enjoy writing. That should be known from the large quantity of content I’ve written over the past few years. I also enjoy machines — at least, ones that catch my interest.

I’ve written before about my love of the typewriter and how I discovered that I enjoyed them (all by a fluke accident, honestly.) Well, 2018 wasn’t as heavy a year for them as 2017 was for me — I only bought a few of them to add to my collection, sold one, and on a whole didn’t do much with them through the year as I had previously.

With the new year I realized I had neglected these wonderful little machines and knew I needed to make better use of them this year. What’s the point of having a hobby if you don’t actively participate in whatever the activity is, right?

Well, it hit me that typewriters are perfect for quick writing tasks, and what may be more quick and (usually) easy than a journal? I’d already done such off and on through the past few years with these machines, on a very “I feel like typing something” basis.

A daily journal would work out well — it would be a reason to use the machines regularly. Daily use of a given machine, rotate machines out every week or so, bing boom done.

So, on January 1st I started. The idea is to write an entry every day at the end of the day regarding, well, the previous day. It doesn’t have to be anything major, just an overview on how I feel, what I’m thinking about things that may have happened that day, plans, what have you. Even updates on each machine as I use, clean, and tweak them. Whatever is on my mind at that moment.

I mean, it’s a journal, that simple. Just one that’s typewritten. It alone really wouldn’t be worth an article were it not for the fact many out there will find such interesting, or maybe it will inspire them for some kind of similar project.

As it stands I’ve been a little behind schedule on entries — now writing about the day previously, rather than while it’s still fresh. As long as I cover every day I’m fine with what my goal is but it is a bit of a chore given how busy I’ve been recently. Still, it’s fun, although I do think it detracts from my website work, it is what it is in the end.

I’ll probably provide updates to this project from time to time, again, for what they are worth to those who find and read this article.

More to come, as always.
