I Gave Destiny 2 Another Chance – It’s Changed, But Is Still The Same…

I mentioned the other week about having not played Destiny 2 for nearly a year, and that I wanted to get back to it as on a whole I really do enjoy the game and would love to play it more, but I had gotten kind of bored with it as it began to just become a chore.

Now, things have changed quite a bit in the game since the past few expansion releases, and I finally took some time to give the game another chance and see if it had enough changed to keep me interested.

Well, over the past week or two off and on I’ve taken a bit of time to give the game a go and I’ve got mixed feelings.

Understand that when I stopped playing I was just partially into Curse of Osiris, hadn’t done anything with Warmind, and certainly haven’t touched any Forsaken content, so I don’t totally know what all is going on in the game world as a side effect of these expansion and the natural changes they provide to the game world.

I can say this much — one element which brought about quite a bit of tedium is gone, namely, the daily challenges, or whatever they were called (seriously, I can’t recall it’s been so long) as they were in the original release seem to be gone. From what I can gather with the oddly spotty information online it looks like they were replaced in Forsaken with new versions which I guess I need to progress in the story to unlock. Okay, that’s fair and matches the tradition with Destiny of “if you don’t buy the new content the old stuff gets locked out to you as well” which was always a little bit of an asshole move, if you ask me.

The level cap is now 50 (it was 30 last I played) so I naturally want to get my Warlock up to snuff – that’s proving fine but still tedious. In addition, the light level cap has been increased and equipment now drops even strong, which is great, but improving weapons through infusion is a bit of a pain given how everything I want to improve now takes “enhancement cores” to improve. Those aren’t common, at least in the few hours I’ve played, to come across, so I’ll have to figure out the best way (for me) to get them so I can improve what I have… or hope for better drops of other weapons that I would want to use but are more powerful.

Weapons have been improved, though — more diversity to what weapons go in what slots, ammo usage types, etc. Again, I haven’t dived into it too much so I can’t explain it all in detail (not like that info isn’t out there already anyway) but I do enjoy this change.

Yeah, I’m sorry, I can’t really go too specific, but in a way I’m having to re-learn the game, and that’s a bit of a chore given how little I actually play games, usually only firing up something before bed for maybe an hour at most, and only once every few weeks maybe. Sometimes sooner, but often not. The point is I just don’t game regularly, so it will be a while before I dive into the story and get things back in motion for Destiny 2.

The sad thing is if the game had changed in any way that felt more rewarding upfront I’d probably find more time for it – it would grab me much like RDR2 did and I’d probably devote another 40+ hours to it over a short span, but for now I’m just not feeling it. It feels like much of the same and in playing the story all I would do is succeed in unlocking things that were already boring me previously and in many cases look like they focus more on multiplayer than solo anyway — something I don’t really care for in games when it’s forced on me.

So, yeah… while it’s only been maybe 2-3 hours total of play over the past couple of weeks, I can say it all feels like much of the same. Too much of the same. Maybe things will be different – new environments are always nice and there are some events and major battles happening in the world I can’t participate in yet due to not having progressed in the story enough to “unlock” these events (go figure) so…. yeah.

I’ll keep on going, as at least playing again for little bits of time is fun. Still, maybe I’m just done with the series. Eh, we’ll find out.
