I Don’t Game As Much As You Would Think…

I write about gaming quite a bit here. It’s one of my main hobbies and something I’ve enjoyed for as long as I can remember. The thing is, I don’t actually sit down and play games as often as people may think, or as I’d like to. While you may think I spend all my free time with a controller in hand, playing whatever the latest title is, the reality is quite the opposite.

It’s strange — I’ll sit down to play a game and sometimes, rarely, I’ll spend a few hours having fun, but most of the time I’ll never really be able to just relax and enjoy the experience. I don’t know if it’s a bit of depression or anxiety causing it or if it’s something else, but the end result is I just don’t relax and game nearly as often as one would think. In fact, the times I write about gaming on here from a firsthand perspective really are about the only times I really sit down and “play” anything for more than maybe 20 minutes!

Xbox one image here because, why not?

Sure, I’ll fire up something like Kerbal Space Program or Cities Skylines on the computer, and I play some typical mobile games (such as Pokemon Go, which I’ve finally gotten into given I’ve got a decent phone finally) but the whole “sit down at my couch, forget everything and just play Halo” type of gaming experience is something I’ve not really done for months — not since Red Dead Redemption 2, and before that I think Titanfall 2 and Destiny 2 (all these 2’s… lol.) Don’t read this wrong — I spend plenty of my free time on other hobbies and interest (like this site) but when I get the urge to play something, sometimes it just doesn’t “click” and 20 minutes later I’m just not having a fun time.

That being said, I do believe part of the issue was how I had things set up — my rooms are very “ad hoc” in arrangement and it was never really conducive to just relaxing with a game and ignoring everything else. I’ll give details later, but for now I can say I think I’ve changed things around for the better, and hopefully will be able to really just zone out with the Xbox One which may well mean more modern gaming content coming soon.

I do have an “at my desk” setup, which I thought I would get more use out of, but as with the main gaming setup, it saw only moderate use, mostly with a PS3 I found last year and Castlevania – Symphony of the Night. That and the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player. I found it more distracting than anything else to have this setup be right at my computer, so, I guess that idea didn’t pan out as well as I thought it would. No big, I’m not going to change it anytime soon as it’s still convenient.

I fired up this thing for the first time in nearly 2 years the other day.

As for the classic gaming setup, that found its way into another room of the house (the “office”) and currently is blocked by other things being stored in that room. I’ll get around to that when I have the time, I’m working on other projects around the house, but the “modern” setup? Yeah, it’s gotten better, so we’ll see.

Yeah, this entry was kind of pointless but whatever — I’ve been meaning to openly ramble about this for what it’s worth to others. Some gamers live video games 24/7, while others really have to make time for it, and be in the right mood. I love gaming, but sometimes I’m just not “in the mood” for it. Such is life, I guess.

More to come, as always.
