Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 131: HyperScan – Episode Review

For the 10th day of Shitsmas the Nerd opens not just a single game, but an entire freaking game system! Yep, for this one he gets a bit more than he hoped for with the Hyperscan game console released in 2006. Yes, James was already well into the AVGN series when this console was released making it (ignoring the AVGN fan games, of course) the most recent thing he’s looked at at this time in the series.

In a gaming environment where the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the Wii were the standard, this sprite-based game system using simple CD-ROM it certainly couldn’t make it on its own — the gimmick behind the system were cards which would be scanned via a RFID system to provide virtually every variable to the game, from what character you play as, to power ups, to stages, everything.

The Nerd covers not one, not two, but all five games released for the system! Of course, he has little good to say – the hardware suffers from absurd load times (giving the Nerd enough time to reminisce about his time fighting Bugs Bunny and his time spent with Lloyd Kaufman) and the games themselves don’t play worth a damn; it’s a recipe for gaming disaster.

Yep. This really beats an Xbox 360! What were they thinking?!?!? Oh, right, “let’s sell all these stupid cards.”

Yeah, another one where there actually isn’t much to say about the episode itself. Heck, I spent more time writing about the hardware than I did the episode, but eh, it is what it is. This piece of garbage had to be looked at sometime — might as well be during shitsmas, right?

Final Rating: 3.5/5

Some of the comedy was a little bit more spot on with this one — especially the setup for the volume being too high. A few good funny moments, but otherwise a pretty basic rip on a poor piece of gaming hardware.
