August 2021 Xbox Live Games With Gold

It’s bloody hot. Too hot to go out and do anything, so why not stay inside and game? Okay, that was an introduction to this entry, but seriously, it is hot out there – August is here and with the new month are new Games with Gold and, amazingly, I’m actually getting to covering them on time! Woohoo!

Let’s take a look:

Starting off we have Darksiders III and Yooka-Laylee.

I’ve never messed with the Darksiders series – I have a PC copy of Darksiders II but have yet to play it — perhaps I should track it down, give it an install and have some fun. Or, maybe not, given how little time I have for things. Doesn’t look bad.

Following that we get Yooka-Laylee. This is an interesting one – it was created by former “core” team members at Rare as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. I recall it being a noteworthy project but it getting average reception. Maybe it’s bland, or maybe nostalgia hit people too strong and they expected more than what the game really was ever supposed to be. Who knows. Whatever case, it’s a cool one to have.

In the Classic lineup we get Lost Planet 3 and Gaoru: Mark of the Wolves.

Another Lost Planet game? Cool. I haven’t given them a go either (long overdue on that) but I like what I see here. One day, maybe, I’ll finally devote some time to these. Ah who are we kidding, it’ll never happen.

Lastly is Gaoru: Mark of the Wolves.

FUCK YEAH! One of the best fighting games ever? I’ll take it. This is SNK fighting game magic in all its glory, and you’d be crazy not to at least give this one a go. Buster Wolf!

Okay, this is a pretty cool lineup, and apparently the peanut gallery agrees, for once. It’s all high profile games, though, so it’s nothing alien to many core gamers; that being said, I’ll take this win for the GwG lineup and people’s opinions.

More to come next month.
