I Just Can’t Do The Online Gaming Discussion Scene Anymore

I’ve been thinking quite a bit recently about my time in the online gaming scene — especially the past 2 or 3 years — and I’ve come to realize I simply can’t do it anymore. The scene has become virtually nothing but a might-makes-right popularity contest where passion, knowledge, and logic mean nothing — do the same, think the same, say the same as everyone else, or else!

I don’t do that. That attitude is one I avoid at all cost. It ruins everything it touches and indeed, online gaming discussion seems to be dead, as far as I’m concerned. Unless you have a couple of thousand to blow on whatever flavor of the week software and hardware is trending, or show off the same few games everyone obsesses over for each system, then no one will give a shit. In fact, they won’t just not give a shit — they will actively be hostile to you because, that’s how communities grow — by being belligerent and accusing others of doing the very “gatekeeping” that you yourself are doing.

It’s something I really could go on and on about, but this overlaps into a bigger thing I wanted to discuss down the line, and plan on when I get the urge. I just really needed to vent this right now. I originally was going to make this a YouTube video but I just couldn’t get the phrasing right. This article isn’t much better and it is (intentionally) a short one but, fuck it — this is my place to say what I want and I will do just that.

More to come, as always, done the way I want to do it. Don’t like it? I don’t care — you can go back to retrosonynintenbro9000’s YouTube channel and ooh and ahh at his collection of Super Mario Bros. Underwear or whatever the hell it is you people actually like.
