In a quite comical chain of events last night, following my publication regarding the talk around X/Twitter about removing the block function I mentioned that I was interested in joining Bluesky. Previously, in private and somewhat in public, I had expressed no interest in joining another social platform, but with X possibly crossing the final line for me I felt I should “get while the getting is good” and carve out another little slice of the social media landscape for myself.
Thus, I applied for the waiting list.
My pal Prince Watercress saw this and had what can only be described as a “bruh” moment — he had an available invite code to the platform and sent it to me. Noticing the message as I was getting ready for bed, I quickly installed the app on my phone and made my account. Moments later, I was in.
I don’t have any particular comments on the platform right now – it’s exactly what I expected, and I have no real complaints. I’ve barely dipped my toes in the water, so to speak, and haven’t sought out any real conversation or anyone to follow beyond Watercress, mainly due to the work week beginning today but also because I’m intentionally taking this slow and building up a presence on the platform before I just go following everyone and everything. I’m trying to start in the best shape here, something I feel one could never do on X these days thanks to its size and age, and something I certainly can’t retroactively change there given I made my Twitter account back in 2010! I’m not going through a decade and a half of interactions to clean things up and make myself look arbitrarily “better” there — that ship has sailed. It’s a dumpster fire that I’m helping pour kerosene on, and I kind of like it like that.
As for Bluesky, I’m hoping to use it for more broad discussion. Whereas on Mastodon, since I’m on the SDF instance I try to stick to tech ./ computer / phreak things there, on Bluesky I feel I may be more general and will, like on Mastodon, try to stay away from the more heated topics. I’m getting tired of my time online being nothing but one idiot after another thinking they are owed an argument, after all.
So yeah, that’s that. Just a little follow up.
