What Happened To All The Space Content?

Anyone who has followed this site over the past few years will notice a few constants about what I write about – technology, gaming, social commentary, and space and rocketry. Given the depth of the articles I’ve written on the subject, my absolute love of that last category, space, and rocketry, is well documented. Even from the earliest blog that this site had back in 2011-2013, space was present as a subject of discussion.

Soon, it became common for me to talk about anniversary events, and then current events. I kept my focus narrow but slowly broadened out over time, having fun all the while. Then, of course, came 2016 and the realization that the entire scene had grown to have a rather, to use a current buzz term to describe such, toxic, element to it. It took a while but I worked through that in 2017 and by 2018 was focusing more on aspects I loved about space and the like.

This worked well with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo missions happening effectively right now – I could cover them as the anniversaries happen and go on and on about how awesome they are, how much I love X, Y, or Z event, etc. That while covering current events, too.

Through 2016, 2017, and most of 2018 this side of things went well enough, up until October of 2018. I wrote over 30 articles that month, and most of them were about, you guessed it, space. It was so intense that by the end of the month I actually got a bit overwhelmed by such, and by November 2018 I finally took a break, and just let things go.

The big moment with this break came on November 16th – the 45th anniversary of the launch of Skylab 4. Long story short Skylab is one of my favorite moments in history, and covering the 45th anniversary of the program was a highlight of my writing over 2018. By this time though, I had already missed quite a few major events which I normally would have covered, and that was the point of no going back. At that stage, I had made a decision to cut off space. I hate that, but it’s all I could do to keep myself on track with everything else I want to write, as October had left me no time to write about much of anything else. Ironic considering that month included my trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

To give you a clue on just some of what went on over October and November 2018 that I missed covering:

  • The Parker Solar Probe made its first pass around the Sun
  • 3 Soyuz launches following the staging failure of Soyuz MS-10, culminating in the successful launch of Soyuz MS-11 to the ISS.
  • 2 Arianespace launches.
  • The 20th anniversary of the launch of the first module of the ISS, Zarya.
  • At least 1 launch by India.
  • NASA InSight landing on Mars.
  • Skylab 4 45th launch and mission anniversary.
  • The OSIRIS-Rex mission arriving at the Asteroid Bennu
  • 30th anniversary of the only flight of the Soviet Space Shuttle – Buran
  • The first samplings from Hayabusa-2 and the asteroid Ryugu

Note the above links do not relate to those events directly, only to my coverage of those missions at a given time in the past.

This all, among a whole host of other things which I failed to talk about. It’s nonstop at this stage, and while I absolutely love that fact, it makes it too much to cover without devoting this site to space, and that’s just not something I can do. That’s not the point of this domain, server, any of it. This site is about what I like and what I wish to write about and/or express my opinions on, and while that certainly can include space, I can’t follow it to the degree I have been anymore without investing more of my time into it than it’s honestly worth.

It’s also the holiday season, so work has been far more intense than the rest of the year. I have to draw a line somewhere, and space is it.

As I’ve mentioned in previous updates, this does mean more content of other types is coming – more gaming and tech-related stuff, more stories from my past and whatever else people may find interesting. While it does pain me to see old articles on space subjects always getting views, I also know I can’t keep up with it anymore. It’s just not going to happen, and while yes, the occasional space article will come up, the constant coverage days, for now, are well behind me.

If you really do wish to see more of my thoughts on these subjects, though, you could always follow me on Twitter. You’ll see plenty of other stuff too, but no harm in following and checking for space things every now and then – I share anything of interest I find on the subject, at the very least. https://twitter.com/kurisu_yamato

The old content isn’t going anywhere — at least, not any time soon. As stated in the last update, underconstruction.gif (Or, Yet Another Update Post), I’m going to be making some changes and continuing to tweak things, but as it stands what’s here will stay here for the forseeable.

Other ends of the site though, they are a’changin.
